SERIES inspiration/thoughts behind series of paintings
Admitting the passage of light; transparent or translucent
nearly white, white on white, calm, texture, tranquility, hidden layers...
Inspired by the textures and tones of the beach and bushland around Sydney. Each piece is an exploration and expression of a sensory journey, painting what I feel rather than what I see. The finished paintings are highly textural and layered.
Feeling of identification, a connection, similarity in structure, a feeling of closeness, understanding.
Water with its energy and fluidity is an intrinsic part of the process of creating these paintings.
Explorations of light and form
“Old, dusty, weathered, empty bowls and vessels in particular fascinate me as a subject matter. I embrace imperfections - my vessels are never shiny and new, I find old, chipped and weathered infinitely more interesting. Often the backgrounds have a sense of age and imperfection as well as the subjects, peeling paint, layers of age. I mostly paint from a picture in my mind, rather than setting up a still life arrangement."
A nod and a reflection to a Scandinavian heritage. With hints of deeper layers, final layer of paint acts to create simplicity and calm. In essence: purity and tranquility.
