About Karin Cutler
Contemporary Artist
Karin is a mixed media painter, working predominantly with acrylics, but also infusing the canvas with natural pigments and textures made from ash, charcoal, rocks and sand collected from around her rural studio.
Influenced by her Scandinavian heritage, she leans towards a calming and neutral palette and uses texture, tone and subtle layering to achieve a sense of movement, depth and interest. Although she paints with a lot of energy she likes to evoke a sense of calm.
She is inspired by her experiences as well as her every day environment: the beach, ocean, bush and rural landscape.
A short behind the scenes video capturing my studio space, a glimpse of my process, inspiration and my art
Hello - I'm Karin
I am a Swedish born, Australian based contemporary painter. After studying textile design at Sydney College of the Arts, life got in the way and I went in various directions with creative pursuits taking a back seat. I continued to study and experiment with various forms of art, from photography and drawing and eventually painting which was a 'love at first sight' experience. Although unplanned, becoming a professional artist became a natural succession after establishing a consistent daily painting practice.
I am on a never-ending journey to find new ways to express myself on the canvas with emotion and authenticity.
is a continuous play between inspiration, curiosity, experimentation, adding & subtracting, reflection, problem solving and critical thinking.

I search for balance between spontaneity and control, chaos and calm.

PROCESS
"A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art".

Paul Cezanne
Almost everything around me, be it nature, travels or my everyday inpsires me. I love imperfections, organic shapes, and rough textures: weathered rock, bark, the ocean on rainy days, cracked plaster and peeling paint on old walls. My art passion is consuming, it provides me with a wonderful sense of purpose…..and a long never ending to-do list!
INSPIRATION
My main studio is a converted shed on our rural property on the mid coast of NSW. I also work out of a home studio in Sydney.
STUDIO
A PAINTING
an emotional roller coaster of creativity
Endless passionate hours of learning, practicing, experimenting, reading, dreaming, exploring, being vulnerable, exhilarated, frustrated, with failures and successes, ie the emotional roller coaster of creativity is the backbone of every artwork.

Each painting contains a piece of my heart, and reflects a moment in time from my life.
