About Karin Cutler

Contemporary Artist

Karin is a mixed  media painter whose work moves between still life and abstraction. Working between Sydney and her rural farm studio, she creates richly textured  paintings using acrylics alongside natural materials and pigments including ash, charcoal, sawdust, sand and other elements gathered from the landscape around her.

It's never really about the subject.

Whether it’s a handful of blueberries, a weathered vessel, a stretch of landscape or a memory of the ocean, these things are simply the starting point. What Karin is really interested in painting is the feeling they leave behind: the calm, familiarity, pause and quiet beauty found in ordinary moments.

Whether abstract or still life, Karin’s paintings are ultimately less about describing a place or object and more about capturing what it leaves behind: a mood, a memory, a sense of calm.

A short behind the scenes video capturing my studio space, a glimpse of my process, inspiration and my art

Hello - I'm Karin

While my work has changed and evolved, the desire to create has always been there. Painting has simply become the place where everything seems to come together.

I am on a never-ending journey to find new ways to express myself on the canvas with emotion and authenticity.

is a continuous play between inspiration, curiosity, experimentation, adding & subtracting, reflection, problem solving and critical thinking.

I search for balance between spontaneity and control, chaos and calm.

PROCESS

"A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art".

Paul Cezanne

Almost everything around me, be it nature, travels or my everyday inpsires me. I love imperfections, organic shapes, and rough textures: weathered rock, bark, the ocean on rainy days, cracked plaster and peeling paint on old walls. My art passion is consuming, it provides me with a wonderful sense of purpose…..and a long never ending to-do list!

INSPIRATION

My main studio is a converted shed on our rural property on the mid coast of NSW. I also work out of a home studio in Sydney.

STUDIO

A PAINTING
an emotional roller coaster of creativity

IMG_7907.jpeg

The creative process is an ongoing journey of dedication: hours spent learning, experimenting, reading, and exploring, filled with moments of vulnerability, exhilaration, frustration, and discovery. It’s a constant emotional rollercoaster, with both setbacks and triumphs, and this energy forms the foundation of every artwork.

Each painting carries a piece of my heart, capturing a unique moment in time from my life.
